Family Trip: Adirondacks

“Keep close to Nature’s heart… and break clear away, once in awhile, and climb a mountain or spend a week in the woods. Wash your spirit clean.” John Muir

Sometimes vacation with little ones feels like more work than relaxing. Long car rides, which result in more rounds of Wheels on the Bus than you ever thought possible. New surroundings, which cause little ones to be wide awake hours past their bedtimes. Sharing a room, which causes little ones to cry all hours of the night because they know you’re just feet away. But when I look back over these pictures and see squinty eye smiles… it’s totally worth it. I hope these are memories they will carry with them for the rest of their lives. I hope they will grow to love the outdoors and the mountains just like their parents.

These two love to be outside and winter is no obstacle. Fabienne will often walk into the living room with her snow pants on and exclaim, outside! Sometimes it takes me longer to suit up three little ones than the amount of time they actually last outside, but it always feels so good to get fresh air. And that last photo.. Abe often grabs Faba’s hand like that and it pretty much melts me.
Little Flock of Horrors recently sent along some clothing made from 100% merino wool. If you are not familiar with merino clothing, you need to be! It is super soft, easy to clean and dries quickly. It’s warm in the cold and cool in the heat. It’s breathable and anti kid smell! But seriously, it’s odor resistant. Little Flock uses New Zealand merino, which is totally renewable and sustainable. Their collection is full of fun colors and sweet designs, perfect for your little monsters!

Thanks to my bearded mister for the lovely photos..

01.. Ready. Set. Go. Feeling a bit overwhelmed, it’s a busy week. Just need to remember it’s full of good things.
02.. Chubby hands and cheerios.
03.. Favorite snack.
04.. Mini daisies are also a good snack option…
05.. Quick lunch. [bonus points for remembering to eat lunch on a busy day..]
06.. Faba was here.
07.. Line dried sheets. Therapy for me…love it!
08.. Dinner with my mister on the patio. Confession: we often eat after the little ones are in bed. I worked a lot today, so it was take out from my favorite taco joint.
09.. She took the longest nap ever today, so she crashed our patio dinner date. 😉

Hope you can step back and enjoy your merry moments today! Marla

Those with down syndrome have 3 copies of the 21st chromosome, which is why we celebrate World Down Syndrome Day on 3/21. A little over three years ago on the 21st of October I gave birth to a baby girl. I had experienced a healthy pregnancy and we had not received a prenatal diagnosis. However, the moment I saw my baby girl, I knew.. she was born with Down syndrome. I went numb. I was sad and I was scared. I think a part of me will always feel guilty that I didn’t experience joy when I saw her. But I didn’t know. I didn’t know what our lives would look like. I didn’t know what her future would look like. I didn’t know her. I would like to share a few things that I wish I had known that day when they passed me my sweet baby girl. Head over to The Merrythought to read full post..

I looked out the window and the sun was setting so lovely, glistening on the snow. “Let’s do some bump photos!”, I exclaimed. When we got outside, I realized it was cold. Like bitter cold… like ten below zero. My mister managed to snap some lovely photos in between my yelling and squealing. I can feel the third trimester exhaustion coming on. It’s getting harder to keep up with my two little ones and I’m starting to sneak in naps whenever I can, which is not very often.. 😉 Overall I’m feeling quite well and this little lady is quite the tumbler. I’ve started to drink raspberry leaf tea (I’m 34 weeks now) and am considering evening primrose oil. Any suggestions from those who have tried it? – Marla

Fabienne First Day: Nursery School

My baby girl started nursery school. And this mamma’s heart is proud. When Fabienne was born I wasn’t sure what her future would look like. What I know now is that she’s much like any other [almost] three year old. She loves to read books, play outside and dance while daddy plays guitar. She has adorable dimples when she smiles and fights over toys with her little brother. Don’t get me wrong, she has to work a lot harder than most peers to accomplish everyday tasks like talking and running. We have four therapists in our house every week. But this little girl is fiercely determined and continues to surprise us with her capabilities. This tiny girl has already changed my perspective on so many things. I believe she will change the lives of many people in her path. I also fear she will face discrimination because she is different. I wrote about it in this post awhile back. If you have not yet read The Talk by Momastery, please take a moment. It’s not too late to have The Talk with your little ones who are just starting out a new school year. Like I said before.. my hope.. my dream.. my prayer is that Fabienne will find compassionate little friends in school. Who love her just the way she is.

The first birthday party is always extra fun to plan because the little ones aren’t old enough to demand what theme they want. For my little Abe I couldn’t resist the ‘Honest Abe’ theme once it crossed my mind. Abraham Lincoln has some fantastic quotes so we used that along with the color copper as inspiration for decorating.
Pictured above::
:: Sweet birthday boy. We used an iron on transfer to make the shirt.
:: Cait spent many hours collecting and hot gluing pennies on the wooden letters.
:: My garden is full of the loveliest peonies right now.
:: A couple party favorites: cheese curds from a local farm and 7 layer taco dip [vegetarian, of course ;)]
:: Manda painted the utensils with copper paint.
:: Love this silly little guy.
:: The tiniest lincoln logs, the little cabin was about 2 inches tall!
:: We used copper tins for some of the snacks and goodies.
:: Cait also made Abe’s sweet little silhouette! DIY tutorial here.
:: We pulled out a vintage table and butter churner for the desserts and drinks.
:: Decorated with some vintage books and copper accessories.
:: We had IBC Root Beer and Cream Soda..always better in glass bottles.
:: One dessert is never enough when Manda comes! Peanut butter caramel bars and little chocolate top hats!
:: Manda made the most delicious ‘White Out’ cake. The white chocolate frosting was a-mazing.
:: Vintage glass pitchers.
:: It was a perfect day for a party on the patio!
:: We used copper wire and wooden dowels to hang the Lincoln quotes.
:: We spray painted cans copper. Love how they turned out.
:: Baby Abey.
:: Uncle Mike crafted this amazing copper cake stand for Abey and I love the tiny silhouette cake topper Manda made!
:: Close up of Abe’s sweet little silhouette.
:: It’s his party…
:: Always helpers near by when it’s time to blow out the candles.
:: Realizing that frosting on the fingers is not a bad thing.
:: Skyping with Aunt Gingy in Santa Barbara.
:: Lincoln in his top hat. 😉
:: I’d say little Abe had a good day!

DATE NIGHT::O’LACY’S!

It’s always a treat to leave the little ones behind and enjoy an evening out with my guy. I’m a vegetarian and believe it or not, my favorite garden burger is at a local pub. It’s the sweetest little pub with an authentic Irish feel. We were lucky enough to visit Ireland a few years ago and it takes us right back each time we walk in. I think it’s a pre-made garden burger, but they grill it and top it with fresh tomatoes and lettuce…and the best part, I cover it in their amazing riviera dressing! They also make their own chips with potatoes from a local farm and serve them with the riviera dressing. SO G O O D.
